Niños / Children

English below (just look for the blue text :-)),

Buenas...

Hi...

Those who know me personally can testify about one of my favorite hobbies: to observe the world from different perspectives in order to better understand what surrounds me...

I have a theory: children are the best philosophers in the world. They have no acquired knowledge, they are thirsty sponges learning a xillion things everyday, innocent eyes that are trying to understand the world with the small amount of experiences they have and, hence, my curiosity to observe these "little wise men" that can make you smile and think about questions with fascinating answers...

Today I spent the day with a friend of mine who has 2 children, a boy and a girl... Living in the Netherlands, these children face a unparalleled challenge: to learn three languages at once and to be able to develop 3 different communication systems (Spanish, English and Dutch) ...

I think I will never be a father (I know things change) 'cause I feel terror when thinking about that a small life would depend on me, taking into account that, honestly, I feel that I have still a lot to learn and live. But kids fascinate me: their innocent eyes, their mischievousness, their way of expressing a willingness, a wish or, simply, their ability to make you smile ...

When observing these children I could not stop smiling and be intrigued: they speak in a differente environment with a different language, Dutch with Dutch children, English and Spanish with English children and me.

They are just a few years old and they are already able to speak three languages: there are also problems (you note how they build with English or Dutch grammar Spanish expressions), but children are small magicians with tons of tricks.

They want to be understood and they use all their willingness to make it happen... It's fascinating.

Children also have a particular way of doing things: suddenly one of them fall to the ground and stay silent, nothing happens until the moment when, curiously, you look at him and he just began mourning. It is their way of claiming your attention, but if you do not pay attention, then the child gets up and continues playing.

Their innocence is by far their best attribute and their worst weakness: when they want you to devote full attention they will not stop until they get so, but if you are a bit clever, you can control those impulses, making them feel they are getting what they want while you keep on doing your stuff...

I like to observe with curiosity and some distance to the children: I like to see how they solve small problems, which may have some complexity. Eating some soup, put some butter on a toast or to reach an object in the kitchen, are small challenges of logic that they solve with unusual imagination. Eating soup with a spoon very slowly or see how, suddenly, they leave the room, go to the kitchen, climb on a chair to reach a straw and return to "drink the soup like Coke"...

I find it fascinating to observe their ability to resolve situations that could be solved easily with a simple "Moooooooooooooooooom" ...

It is fun to talk and play with them to see things that interest them (today the object that has triumphed have been my white headphones and they have learned a new word: "iPod" :-))...

Everything is new, everything is fascinating but, in turn, some things are tough... Observe their reactions, their negotiation skills facing the environment (they know that if they cry they'll gain attention and help, for example) and, at the same time, to observe the reaction of the environment (to teach the child that he must be able to do some things by himself) and thus learn that strange feeling that, when I ask about it, I always get the same answer:

"Paquito ... One day you will be a father and understand all of this" ...

I remember once a mother with her child... I remember watching her to interact with the kid and she told me that, because of that she "felt like a National Geographic documentary" with my comments and questions... "Why did you do such a thing?" Or "So this way you get this or that" are phrases that accompanied the beautiful image of a mother playing and reasoning with her 3 year old child...

I think (and I will finish) that we all have a child inside us and that, precisely, is our ability to fuel the engine of our lives, as our lives depend on how healthy that child inside of us is.

Keep your capacity to be fascinated by small things in life, finding beauty in the most unexpected places, smile when a child learns for the first time in her life the word "iPod", and above all a infinite feeling of joy when one of those children asks you for help because, in the end, he has decided to rely on you and allow you to play with his favorite toy...

Tomorrow I have an interview in The Hague and, on Friday, I will have telephone interview with the United States: disregarding the results on these interview, I will try to keep the child inside me fascinated when watching the train reaching the platform :-))

Kind regards: Amsterdam prevails! :-))

Paquito.
