Ese pequeño extranjero / That Little Foreigner

English below (just look for the blue text),

----------------- English Version ------------------

He tends to appears very often in the supermarket: usually late, between 20:30 and 21:00. The grocery store closes at 22:00...

Normally, he walks in silence with his cart and his scanner: the supermarket has a system where you can scan the products by yourself and in the end, when you have to pay, you do not have to put all your products in the typical conveyor belt...

Usually, the process is something quick: you arrive, you deliver the scanner to the cashier, they tell you what you have to pay and then you leave...

But there is something strange: with him, things do not work like that...

It all begins with an unintelligible Dutch phrase: the little foreigner, while smiling and with a small sense of humor, often look to the person, who tends to reply with a big smile while, with his peculiar accent, says "sorry: I do not speak Dutch : -))"...

But he loves to listen that language: that is how he learns ...

From there, it start a small protocol that gradually becomes an habit: the little foreigner speaks for a few seconds with the person who is attending him @ the checkout, putting a thousand faces, talking with his hands, with his eyebrows, with his eyes ...

For 30 seconds, even the person who is behind the small foreign, notes with curiosity the way that he try to say things, no matter what the content is, because there is only one goal, only one ...

Try to make smile to the cashier (usually a girl, although sometimes there is also a guy who is also very kind)...

And during those 30 seconds, everything disappears: the supermarket is no longer a supermarket... There are only two people talking about nothing with a single and clear objective which is to forget everything that happens in our lives...

Because for 30 seconds, only during those 30 seconds, I stop being invisible...

Everything ends with "Have a great evening" while I do arrange the products I have purchased in my bag ...

We are not special: we are not unique snowflakes ... In fact, we are all essentially the same ...

But for 30 seconds, just over 30 seconds, I do recreate my little world .. The world in which I believe, the world that shows that things may be different ...

And those 30 seconds have a curious effect: when leaving the supermarket, I observe to the person I left behind and she keeps on smiling...

Changing the world begins when you can create those magical 30 seconds ...

It's that little foreign who you may find one day while you're in the supermarket: probably you'll find he's not a foreigner and It is almost certain that you won't find him in a supermarket...

Do not wait to see what does it feels like during those 30 seconds: just do it...

Amsterdam prevails under a kaleidoscope of mathematics ;-))
