Un día en la Universidad / A day at the University

English below (just look for the blue text),

Buenas,

He conseguido mi objetivo...

Amsterdam Prevalece...

----------------- English Version ------------------

Hi,

Just come to arrive @ Home: I have been reviewing the mail and now, Finally I'm going to give you the results from "Professor Paquito" in his lecture at the University...

I arrived very early: in the e-mail address from person who invited me we had two copies of the presentation (in different formats just in case one of them didn't work). In my pocket, a USB stick with three copies of the presentation (two different formats and an autorun system).

We tried the ballroom and we found a problem: because of the light we couldn't see the screen but that wasn't a problem: finally some people would not attend, so it would have 100 pupils...

And there was a free room for 100 people, so it was perfect for me ...

"We have no microphone Paquito" I was told when we tested everything...

"I am Spanish: believe me, there is no need for one"...

At 10:00 I began my lecture. The next speaker was an Apple guy and he arrived just when I did... He sat at the end of the room and opened his brand-new MacBook Pro (an amazing laptop) ...

Later on he would confess to me that he did so to see how I presented myself, hence his first slide was "an imitation" of mine...

Apple accuses Microsoft of copying their stuff, as you may be aware... But today he was "copying" me... It was really funny...

The presentation was tested with several people (thank you all for your collaboration) but the feedback I received last night was the one from my sister: I had to change the title and I also deleted a few slides that perhaps were not appropriate for the audience I was going to talk to...

And there I was: 100 students and Paquito speaking in English, trying to explain them what I have learned working in different countries with different cultures and multinational environments...

I was having a great time: I explained to them the cultural misunderstandings, the logic of multinational corporations, the qualities that anyone, when wishing to make an international career, must have... I told them the truth: the good things and the bad things too, how fantastic and how hard it can be... I got a couple of slides with a pair of funny pictures, I used some anecdotes and told them, always respectfully, to question everything, never assuming anything as "normal "...

The example I think they will remember the rest of their lives is the one with the glass of water... If you ask for a glass of water in Spain or here in The Netherlands, you'll get a glass of tap water... In Germany (and in Argentina, for instance) if you ask for a glass of water, you'll get a glass of sparkling water... And in China, however, you'll get a glass of hot water ...

"Same concept: a glass of water and yet, three completely different results" ...

You must also notice that today, I do not know very well why, there was a sort of holiday or something like that at the University (I didn't understand very well the concept): tonight they have a party and some of them were "excited" because of that...

But they were listening to me: they were paying me attention while offering the required silence to be able to explain everything... The teachers observed me while I was talking about my my life and my stories in this small but diverse world...

When I finished the presentation I replied to some questions (which was fantastically cool) and, when no one raised arm, I thanked them for their attention, kindness and then...

Ovation...

I was smiling while listening the applause, but inside me I was savoring every applause they were giving to me: they liked it, I retained their attention, I taught them things and probably they will find it useful ... I achieved my goal ...

Yes: I got my goal, but I got something else... The course director (or something like that: she had a position which name I cannot remember) asked me whether I could repeat the presentation in September for some students that were doing a Master. She was very happy, as she told me that she was delighted because I told the things in "a very interesting and very funny way"...

The students approached me to thank me for "the show": some of them, as they told me (but I think they were exaggerating), it had been the best presentation they had seen at the University... "Every time someone comes from a company, they normally tell us stuff about it, but they do not explain anything about how is the real experience when working in their working environments"...

Then Apple made its appearance: they installed a couple of Macs (a Macbook and a Macbook Air, which I had in my hands incidentally) and the guy began his presentation (he did it in Dutch) ...

The truth is he was explaining very interesting things but I think that, in my very humble opinion, it was for the wrong audience: he was giving a speech more focused on teachers and universities as a whole, but not for students... When question time arrived, students posed him very very very good question (glorious one: "You say that Apple bet for the education, universities and students but: Why Macs are so expensive? Students do not have enough money to buy a Mac")... He replied very well indeed :-))

To help him, I did a couple of questions, sort of: "If one of these guys would like to work for Apple, Which qualities are you looking for?" but, in my opinion, the replied what anyone else would and, being Apple, he could have explained a billion things from one of the most attractive companies in the world (especially for students) ...

So, once this thing was finished, I went to have lunch at the University's canteen , but students were still asking me things, curious about what they were going to find in business, asking me which were, in my opinion, the things they had to do to have a successful international career ...

It was great: I felt great thinking that my experience could provide so much value to people younger than me (their age were between 18 and 21 years old) ...

But... What about yesterday's interview? It was fantastic: Honestly, I did it very well (the recruiter was impressed with my energy, my desire to do things, my experience and how I replied to her questions) ...

So this is the "update" which some of you claimed: Paquito was back at the University and I had a great time because, and this is the truth, if there is something I am passionate about, it is, precisely, about teaching things, explaining concepts and, when possible, to explain the things you believe in, then nothing can stops you...

Amsterdam prevails...

Paquito.

@ Saltamontes: Momentazo Paquito total...

    Paquito.
