Abarrotado / Crowded

English below (just look for this color text),

Buenas,

------------------ English Version ------------------

Hi,

Sunday Evening: the quietest moment in Europe (tomorrow the week starts again :-)).

Day of bike, shops, restaurant and coffee (quite a day actually), but everything under the same condition: we are in Amsterdam...

The Netherland is a country with an astonishing population density: 387 inhabitants by square kilometer (the highest in Western World) provoking one of the main characteristics of Sundays in Amsterdam: a huge quality of people on streets, shops, restaurants and coffees...

In the moment where a place gets some relevance or it receives some mouth to ear, queues appears and makes almost impossible to enjoy whatever it is in the conditions that, for example in Spain, you could enjoy have...

Example: today I have some appetite for french fries... In the centre of Amsterdam there's a place (really small) where you can buy some fries with the sauce you want to put (here they like french fries with Mayonesse but I do like them with Ketchup)...

So, something as silly as that was a queue with 20 people (and they serve a person every 20 seconds aprox.)...

Later that moment I went to the Kalverstraat, the street for doing shopping here: and there you really feel like traveling on Tokyo's Underground... And in the shops is the same... Furthermore, as the price of the soil in Amsterdam is really expensive, buildings tend to be small, creating the paradox of having problems something to move within a shop (they try to put a lot of stuff in a really small place plus the people buying inside the shop)...

Finally, on that very street, I ate in a place called "La Place" where I had a good and a bad experience at the same time...

Let me explain you this: "La Place" is quite a nice place: you literally choose the ingredients you want them to cook you with some noodles for example, or cooking the meat as you like in front of you with the things you like, they have delicious natural juices... It's a very interesting place and I could recommend it but not in a day with a lot of people...

That means: I shouldn't have gone today...

So today, when I tried to get some cooked stuff for me, because of the quantity of people in the place, I finally quited: I took a salade and a sort of pita-bread with salmon with a pineapple juice ...

Such a pity 'cause the food was delicious, but the place was crowded...

After that, a coffee at "De Jaren" café reading some press to see how's the world going (I left you alone and then I have to arrange everything back again :-)) 'cause I don't want to fully disconnect from reality.

Whether you come to The Netherlands, you'll see both sides of the coin: silent, quiet and lonely canals while, just 2 blocks away, you'll have crowds of people, not suitable for agoraphobics...

That's all: Amsterdam Prevails! :-)

  5. Salut Chipie,

Si no, ole ahi.

  8. Hi,

I am Dutch and I live in Amsterdam, even though currently I live in Turku, Finland. It's a lot of fun to read about your experiences in my city. Everyone in Amsterdam should know not to go La Place on Sundays :)

The little french fries place you're talking about has been named the best french fries place in the whole of The Netherlands a couple of times, that's also why it's so busy there always. It's in the Heiligeweg (Holy street). :)

  9. Hi, Hello! :-))

I knew my statistics couldn't be wrong: I have a reader in Finland!!!! :-))

First of all (as I say to everybody): thank you very much for your visit and your comment: it's a great honor for me to receive a visit from a dutch :-))

I loved the fries and I hated to queue so long @ La Place... Anyway, I enjoyed the visit (though is crowded, always crowded!!! :-)).

I invite you, if you like, to write here in this blog about your city (I would be honored): send me your post in english and I'll translate it into Spanish (or send it into Spanish if you speak my language :-)).

Read to read you and, of course, thanks very much again for your visit and your comment :-))

    Regards from Amsterdam :-))
