Tulipanes / Tulips

English below (just look for the blue text),

Buenas,

------------------ English Version ------------------

Hi,

As I received a direct petition from a frequent reader (thanks Sara), I'll talk to you about of the icons in The Netherlands: the tulips...

Here in the Netherlands you can find the "Amsterdam's Flower Exchange Market": regarding flowers, Amsterdam's flower market is like New York's Wall Street (curiously New York was founded by the Dutches and initially it was called "New Amsterdam", so we can see some of that spirit came from here ;-)).

Unfortunately we're in November, and that means it's not the time to see tulips flowering :-(... I wanted to talk about it when the moment arrives but a petition is a petition...

However, if you want to see something really amazing, you only have 8 weeks every year, a time frame between Mid-March and Mid-May, when the Keukenhof ("Kitchen's Garden" in Dutch) is open: a spectacular 7 million (I'm not kidding) tulip park which is only open 8 weeks because it's the moment where the tulips bloom, that is, during the Spring... It really worth to pay the entrance and I recommend you to visit it in April, when the park is in its maximum splendor and, believe me, it's unbelievable...

Curiously, The Keukenhof was designed by the same guys who designed the Vondelpark (the park I showed you the other day and, as it is autumn-winter, you saw it wasn't nice)...

The tulip is Netherlands' Symbol (together with the orange color: I'll have to explain that one another day): However, this plant has a Turkish origin and, at the same time, it's the cause of one of the most extraordinary economical disasters in history: "The Tulip's fever"...

During the sixteenth century, after the dutches recovered their independence from the Spanish, a German guy bring to Europe a quite curious plant from Turkey (the tulip).

But, one day, certain bulbs from that plant begin developing astonishing colors and variations: all of a sudden, having one of those variations was a symbol of fortune, wealth, good taste and people began playing a load of money for those tulips...

Those exotic bulbs were just the result of the attack from a parasite that didn't kill the bulb, but just altered the chemical composition (hereafter the resulting color variations): all of a sudden there was a "fever" for those tulips as nothing similar was never seen: people paid fortunes for them... People exchange houses and jewels for them, several tulip exchange houses were created in different cities here, future markets, an enormous wild bubble where, finally, almost everybody joined...

But, one day, seeing the bubble could burst, demand stopped and the offer increased: people who payed fortunes, selling all their possessions, discovered those bulbs worth virtually nothing... It was a tough period for this country, which, for some years, became one of the wealthiest nations in the world...

Nowadays, the remaining of that are Amsterdam's Flower Exchange Market (a market were millions of operations related with plants from around the world are handled daily), the traditional tulip's fields, and the bulbs you can buy in the shops with the color you wish...

Dutches learned soon what other nations would learn later: 1929's New York Stock Exchange Crack, 2000's .com Bubble, and Spanish Real State Bubble right now: just the same example of the things that happened here around 350 years ago...

Cause at the end, humans are just humans: we do have Internet, television, we send shuttles to the Space, but, at the end, you can go to any public toilet in the world (no matter what country you can choose) and read in almost all of them the same phrase:

IF YOU'RE READING THIS, YOU'RE A STUPID

And maybe you can find this funny or quite an anecdote, but, believe me, it is not: it's the same phrase found in the Public Baths in Pompey, a phrase written by (I guess) one funny guy around, more or less, 2000 years ago...

That's all for today: Amsterdam Prevails! :-))
