Hola :-))

Mañana no trabajo (en teoría :-)): es tarde y tengo algunas cosas pendientes (no me olvido de tu encargo Sara) pero hoy, mientras revisaba el iGoogle (tenía cientos de entradas sin leer de los blogs que habitualmente sigo), recordé el origen de mi pasión en la vida, que no es otra cosa que mi amor hacia la tecnología...

Todo empezó como suelen empezar estas cosas: cuando eres pequeño y, generalmente, delante de una pantalla (de televisión en este caso)...

Era muy pequeño (7 u 8 años) cuando vi, por primera en mi vida, una película que hablaba/versaba acerca de videojuegos y de ordenadores... Se llamaba "Tron" (algunos quizás también la recordéis)...

Recuerdo el impacto que dejó aquella película dentro de mi: fue la primera vez en mi vida que alguien visualizó para mi lo que era introducirse dentro de una máquina... Y, honestamente me impresionó...

El momento determinante para mi llegaría uno o dos años más tarde, una vez más delante de la misma pantalla...

La película en esta ocasión se llamaba "Juegos de Guerra" y contaba la historia de un chico (un jovencísimo Mathew Broderick, actual marido de la protagonista de "Sexo en Nueva York", Sara-Jessica Parker) que era un genio con los ordenadores y que, buscando un videojuego, accedió a un ordenador del NORAD (la Agencia de Defensa encargada de la gestión de los misiles nucleares en USA) que simulaba Juegos de Guerra (no os voy a contar toda la historia: mejor la véis :-))...

Lo que cambió mi vida no fue lo de los misiles, el NORAD o la trama de la película, sino algo mucho más tonto y trivial: aquel chico accedía a los ordenadores de su instituto a través del teléfono de sus casa y, asaltando el sistema, cambiaba sus notas...

Era demasiado pequeño y apenas había tenido contacto con ordenadores (a partir de aquel momento, sin embargo, cuando empecé a visitar la oficina donde trabajaba mi padre, aquellas extrañas máquinas que utilizaban para trabajar cambiaron completamente de significado para mi), pero el hecho de que alguien desde su casa, Y POR TELEFONO (yo pensaba que eso debía de ser Ciencia-Ficción) pudiera cambiar sus notas, me dejó marcado de por vida...

No soy informático, pero la tecnología es mi pasión: desde aquel momento, desde aquella película, supe que mi vida giraría alrededor de la misma...

Y curiosamente, desde hace algunos años, así ha sido, trabajando en empresas que giran alrededor del uso de la tecnología que mueve el mundo...

Hace unos días me desperté a las 4 de la mañana (sin ningún motivo en concreto: simplemente me desperté y ya está)... Sin saber qué hacer, me puse a ver una película en Internet: "Los piratas de Silicon Valley", que es la historia del nacimiento de Apple, Microsoft y sus líderes (Steve Jobs y Bill Gates)...

Justo después de terminar de verla (eran las 6 de la mañana), recordé un nombre que ha estado revoloteando en mi cabeza desde hace unas semanas: "Jonathan Ive"...

¿Qué quién es Jonathan Ive? Es el responsable de que, cada vez que ves un producto de Apple, tus pupilas se dilaten (es su Vice-presidente de Diseño Industrial)...

¿Por qué su nombre revolotea en mi cabeza? Porque vi una entrevista suya hace unas semanas y me impresionó su sencillez, su historia y un detalle que no pasó desapercibido para mi: su extremada humildad (al hablar de los diseños de Apple, en ningún momento dijo "Yo", sino "Nosotros" en referencia a su equipo, la gente que trabaja con y para él)...

En un mundo de grandes egos como es el mundo de la tecnología, el encontrar al mago de Apple (sin contar al "Gran Mago de Woz", Steve Wozniak, que merece otro post aparte) hablando con tanta sencillez me impresionó... Alguien que puede presumir de haber diseñado los iMacs, iPods, Macbooks e iPhones que emocionan a millones de personas en todo el mundo (ganando una barbaridad de reputados premios de diseño en cualquier lugar que se te ocurra) y que no haya caido en esa espiral es digno de todas las posibles alabanzas que se me puedan ocurrir (no soy el único: es un icono reverenciado tanto en el sector tecnológico como en los ambientes de diseño)...

Lo más divertido es que la tecnología, aún hoy, sigue emocionándome: alguien de pronto me habla de un nuevo servicio en internet, de un nuevo software o de un nuevo dispositivo, y sigo prestando el mismo nivel de atención que hace años. Los criterios han cambiado, eso sí (ya no utilizo todo lo que me dicen, sino que, en primer lugar, busco información sobre lo que me recomiendan y después decido si quiero utilizarlo o no)...

Ya no soy un primer adoptador de tecnología: sin embargo, quizás como resultado de mi pasión, me he convertido en un prescriptor de la misma (recomiendo poquísimas cosas, cada vez menos, pero cuando lo hago, los receptores de mis recomendaciones saben que lo que estoy diciendo parte de mi propia experiencia y de mis altas exigencias en las cosas que utilizo)...

Y quizás mis propios criterios han cambiado: mi pasión se ha visto alterada por un pequeño detalle desde hace un tiempo, y es que, más allá de la funcionalidad de las cosas, de pronto he comenzado a comprender el justo equilibrio de los principios de la arquitectura: "Robustez, Utilidad y Belleza", siendo como he sido, casi toda mi vida, alguien para quien los dos primeros principios lo eran todo y donde lo último, en realidad, apenas tenía relevancia...

Y digo bien, "casi toda mi vida" porque precisamente ese es el cambio (Pedro estará orgulloso de mi cuando lea estas líneas): la introducción del gusto en el diseño en los objetos tecnológicos...

Hace unos años, hablando de ésto, recuerdo a alguien hablando sobre como Apple conseguía emocionar a las personas que observan a sus productos y a su líder: es ESPECTACULAR escucharle...

Confieso que desde hace 3 años no me pierdo ni una sola de sus escasísimas intervenciones en público: más allá de lo que cuenta (que me interesa) observo el cómo lo cuenta (sus movimientos, su mirada, sus gestos y, muy especialmente su voz)...

Al fin comprendo una de sus frases (después de todos estos años): "Los objetos deben tener cultura" y ellos lo consiguen...

Y algo de razón tendrán en lo que hacen, porque de pronto (al fin: sabía que era posible, por más que me lo han negado cientos de veces los mismos que ahora aplauden Windows Vista) los principales fabricantes de ordenadores del mundo han empezado a utilizar el diseño en sus productos (algunos con resultados notables: otros simplemente siguen sin entender que las formas curvas son más bellas que las formas cuadradas)...

Quizás todo esto te parezca raro (tecnología, ordenadores, Apple, Microsoft...) e incluso puede que no lo entiendas... Puedes pensar (no sin falta de razón) que es aburrido y que, quizás, es una pérdida de tiempo porque hay cosas mejores que hacer en la vida (ya te lo confirmo yo: estás en lo cierto :-))...

Pero la próxima vez que vayas a comprarte una camisa, unos zapatos, un coche, un televisor, unos cuchillos para tu cocina (o la cocina incluso) piensa por un instante que, incluso la persona más racional (sí: incluso esa persona) durante unos instantes comprará con sus ojos y con su sentido de la percepción (después mirará a la etiqueta y quizás eso sea el factor determinante) pero, en igualdad de condiciones siempre, digo bien, SIEMPRE, elegirás aquello que sientas que te gusta más, que quizás combine con el propósito, cosas o lugares donde el objeto será utilizado...

Durante unos instantes, tu mente utilizará una serie de criterios que irán más allá de aquello que reclamas que no te influye (por más que te niegues a creerlo: acéptalo)...

Recuerda: primero observas los objetos, y luego miras las etiquetas (con los precios y las características), ¿Verdad? ;-))

Y yo (aquí termino) lo tengo clarísimo: mi próximo ordenador ha sido diseñado (o lo será) por Jonathan Ive...

Mi pasión es la tecnología y esta noche he encontrado al fin un par de utilidades de las que quizás hablaré con alguno de vosotros... Tengo que probarlas primero PERO, si realmente funcionan como creo que lo hacen, desde esta noche mi vida tecnológica se habrá simplificado un poquito más :-))

Tomorrow I do not have to go to work (in theory :-)): it is late and I have some things pending (I do not forget your assignment Sara) but today, while revising iGoogle (I had hundreds of unread entries from the blogs I usually follow), I remembered the origin of my passion in life, which is nothing other than my love for technology...

It all started as all these things often begin: when you are a child and you are in front of a screen (a television in this case) ...

I was very small (when I was around 7 or 8 years old) when I saw for the first in my life, a film that talked / dealt about video games and computers... It was called "Tron" (some of you might also remember it) ...

I remember the impact the film left in me: It was the first time in my life that somebody visualized for me the introduction into a machine... And, honestly it impressed me ...

The defining moment for me came one or two years later, once again in front of the same screen...

The film on this occasion was called "War Games" and talked about the story of a boy (a very young Matthew Broderick, husband of the current star of "Sex and the City", Sarah Jessica Parker) who was a genius with computers and that, while looking for a video game, he accessed to a NORAD's computer (a US Defence Agency responsible for the management of nuclear missiles) that simulated war games (I am not going to tell you the whole story: you better see it :-)) ...

What changed my life was not the story around missiles, NORAD or the movie plot, but something much more silly and trivial: that boy was able to access to the computer's high school via telephone from his home and changed his grades...

I was too small and had little contact with computers (from that time, however, when I began to visit the office where my father worked, those strange machines changed in meaning for me), but the fact that someone from home, and by telephone (I thought that should be Sci-Fi) could change his grades, left a mark on me for the rest of my life...

I am not a computer engineer, but technology is my passion since that day, and, since that movie, I knew that my life will go around that...

And curiously, for several years already, I have been working in businesses that go around the use of technology that moves the world...

A few days ago I woke up at 4 am (for no reason in particular: I just woke up)... Without knowing what to do, I began to see a movie on the Internet: "Pirates of Silicon Valley", which is the story around the birth of Apple, Microsoft and its leaders (Steve Jobs and Bill Gates) ...

Just after finishing the movie (it was around 6 am), I remembered a name that has been going around my head from a few weeks: "Jonathan Ive" ...

Who is Jonathan Ive? He is responsible of, whenever you see an Apple product, your pupils dilate inmediately (he is the Vice-president of Industrial Design) ...

Why does his name flies around my head? Because I saw an interview a few weeks ago and I was impressed by his simplicity, his story and a detail that did not go unnoticed for me: his extreme humility (when talking about Apple's designs, he never said "I", but "We" in reference to his team, the people who work with and for him) ...

In a world of big egos as the world of technology, to find that Apple's Wizard (not counting the "Great Wizard of Woz," Steve Wozniak, who deserves another different post) talking with such simplicity impressed me...

Someone who could presume of having designed iMacs, iPods, iPhones and Macbooks that excite to millions of people around the world (winning a barbarity of reputable design awards anywhere you may name) which has not fallen in this spiral, deserves all the possible praise that I may think of (I am not alone: he is an revered icon both in the technology sector as well as the design one)...

The funniest thing is that technology, even today, touches me: someone suddenly talk about a new Internet Service, a new software or a new device, and yet provides me the same level of attention that years ago. The criteria have changed, that's also true (and I do not use everything that I hear of but, first, I seek all the possible information around it, so then I can decide whether I want to use it or not) ...

I am no longer a technology first adopter: however, perhaps as a result of my passion, I have become a prescriber (I recommend very few things, fewer and fewer, but when I do, the receivers know that what I am saying comes from my own experience and my high level of demands on the things that I use) ...

And perhaps my own criteria have changed: my passion has been altered by a small detail for some time now, and that is, beyond the functionality of things, I suddenly started to understand the right balance of the principles of architecture: "Ruggedness, useful and Beauty", being as I have been almost all my life, someone for whom the first two principles were the main ones and where the latest, actually, barely had relevance...

And I repeat, "almost all my life" because this is precisely the change (Pedro will be proud of me when he read these lines): the introduction of taste when designing technology objects...

A few years ago, talking about this, I remember someone talking about how Apple touch people who watch their products and their leader: by the way, it is spectacular to listen to him...

I confess that for 3 years now, I have never lost one of his very few public interventions: beyond that, what counts for me (which interests me) out of the things he say are his movements, his eyes, his gestures, and especially his voice)...

I finally understand one of his phrases (after all these years): "The objects must have some culture on it" and I now fully agree with him...

And for some reason I think they are right on the things they are doing, because all of a sudden (at the end: I knew it was possible, even though those who denied it to me a hundred times are the ones who applaud now Windows Vista) the major computer manufacturers in the world have begun to use some design in its products (with some notable results: others simply still do not understand that curves are more beautiful than squares)...

Perhaps all this will seem strange for you (technology, computers, Apple, Microsoft ...) and even you may not understand it at all... You may think (not without lack of reason) this is boring and perhaps it is a waste of time because there are better things to do in life (and I can confirm you this: You are quite right :-))...

But the next time you go to buy a shirt, a pair of shoes, a car, a television, some knives for your kitchen (or even the whole kitchen) think for a second that even the most rational people (yes, even them) during a few seconds they buy with their eyes and their sense of perception (then they look at the label and perhaps that is the determining factor) but on equal terms always, I repeat, always you will choose what you feel you like the most, perhaps because of the way the object combines with the purpose, with other things or places where the object will be used at/for...

During a few moments, your mind will use a set of criteria that goes beyond what you claim it does not influence you (even if you refuse to believe it, you may accept it) ...

Remember: you first look at the objects, and then you look at the labels (with prices and features), right? ;-))

And I (and I will end up in here) what I have it quite clear: my next computer has been designed (or will be designed) by Jonathan Ive ...

My passion is technology and tonight I found at last a couple of utilities which I may will share with any of you... I must try first them, but, if they really work as I think they do, then my technological life will be simplified tonight a little bit more :-))
