English below (just look for the blue text),

Hola :-))

No exactamente, ¿Verdad?

3. Inteligencia: aquí me voy a explayar...

- No hace ruido.

---------------- English Version ------------------

Hello :-))

Today I will talk about technology, and, I promise, I'll do it simple and personal (I won't use geek terminology or things like that) ...

Of course, my opinion is questionable (actually: I want to discuss it) so, if you do not think the way that I do, then leave a comment and let's talk :-))

It all started when someone sent me a video containing new Microsoft's advertising campaign in United States to promote PCs with Windows.

The idea is quite good: to offer $ 1000 for a person to buy the computer they want to ...

At the end of the ad, obviously, that person buys a PC: the Mac option is ruled out because, according to the person who performs in the ad "does not meet her requirements with that money" ...

Fair enough: I will not argue against it (everyone chooses what he likes and wants), and whether that person prefers a PC (by the way: the girl in the ad bought a very good computer, truth be told) , I will not say otherwise...

"Mac users pay $500 (or 1000 then in my case) dollars / euros more for a computer that does the same things as a PC... "Mac owners are snobs"...

The latter is almost almost true: for years I have found some people that, just because they were Mac users, they make you feel they belong to another planet above yours...

And yes, I think it's true you pay a surcharge for using Apple products (no doubt about it) ...

BUT (you know where's always one around anything) I think there is some demagoguery on the ads from our friends at Microsoft (in fact nobody is right and no one is usually wrong: it is a statistical principle and common sense: it was Apple this time who began with the ads saying things about the other :-))).

"An Apple users pay more than $ 500 for the same thing you get with a PC"...

Not exactly: it is true that, when going to a computer shop, you may find very attractive computers starting from 500 Euros and the cheapest Mac you can buy is 900 around Euros...

Therefore, price against price, the ads they publish are right: But I think they do not give us a real comparative: we are not comparing pears with pears ...

"All cars have 4 wheels, an engine, a steering wheel and seats... Mercedes-Benz users pay up to 25,000 Euros more than Opel users ...

True: but ... Is that the same thing a Mercedes and an Opel? Not exactly, right? (although both can fulfill the same purpose in the same way: drive from point A to point B).

I currently manage 7 computers: 3 in Spain and 4 in The Netherlands. The Dutch are easy to control (1 belongs to my sister, other is my NETBOOK, another one is my computer laptop from work, where I have been granted administrative rights and the other one is the Mac).

All I know is that every time I am contacted from Spain, in one way or another, the "When are you coming to my computer because..." motto tend to appear in the conversation.

And in the Netherlands is similar: today someone is going to MediaMarkt to enforce the warranty (because when things are not made in the right way, bad things tend to happen) for one of those computers.

6 of those computers are PCs: Although I love playing with them and study them up to extract up to the last ounce of performance, the truth is that It takes me mental space just to get what I want (a computer to do things more or less on the way I want them).

Then, the computer requires you to pay attention and take care of it (something that 95% of users does not do at all: it is true, and this is my view, that users should not have to do it) for things like defragmenting files, disk drives, eliminating temporary files, unused records, security, bla bla bla ...

Taking care of these things make your computer last longer: it's like taking the car to the garage and make revisions... The better care you car receives, the better the performance, durability and safety while driving it...

But a computer is not like a car: a computer is much more advanced (there is less iron and a lot more intellectual work in it, where instructions are not transmitted through physical objects, but through ones and zeros and, finally, are processed by incredibly advanced physical technologies).

Of these 7 computers, only one does not demand me anything at all: I had to learn to adapt myself (it is a very different world from the PC one) but once I finished the "adaptation period", I barely spent time looking for the things I described you above...

Because someone did it already for me: the manufacturer.

The Mac is a closed world: it has the advantage that, being a single manufacturer who decides what and how to make your computer, software vendors can reduce development time and devote that time to quality or what they want ( and you can see it in the available software, believe me) ...

The Mac world also has it disadvantages: if you like to try and install new technologies, there are less applications and software variety than in the PC world (and most of them are not free, this is important too)...

However, I must insist: I do not spend a minute of my time doing other things than the ones that I am supposed to do with a computer: writing texts, surf the Internet, read e-mails, manipulating images, editing videos...

I do not spend time thinking about how I can optimize it because someone has already thought about this: the operating system software and hardware manufacturer (who are the same entity: Apple).

From there, the differences are quite significant:

1. Design: Yes, I said "design" ... Very well-designed devices from the aesthetic and industrial design point of view (I will speak about the last thing in a moment)... And these things are very well designed (it is a jewel, and if you do not like, then I'm sorry, but there is little to discuss in this regard).

2. Performance ... This things have the real "state-of-the-art" technology (it is not the same to have a 100 powerhorses engine than one with 300, even though the speed is restricted on the cars) ... As a closed platform, everything is optimized and made for the same components: the quality of user experience is radically different from other platforms.

3. Intelligence: I'm going to elaborate in here ...

- A magnetic power connector (if you pull the plug, it get unhooked very easily and the computer is still in place) with a battery status indicator so that, with just a light, the cable indicates you whether the computer is recharging the battery or the battery is already charged.
- A system that analyzes the physical computer position (the Sudden Motion Sensor), so if you your computer falls from your hands or from a table, the moving parts of the hard disk get blocked, so that at least your data will not be lost (and for those who have lost computer data because of something like that, I think they can understand the importance in here).
- "Real" usage of your computer by using your hands (I have already given up the mouse on the Mac: literally do not need it and it is not uncomfortable), through its multi-touch technology gestures.
- A system that analyzes the amount of light in the room to adjust the brightness on the screen (this, believe me, it's great so you do not hurt the eyes).
- A keyboard that, depending on the amount of light in the room, gets illuminated in one way or another so you can see the keys in semi-darkness or complete darkness (this is PRICELESS for people like me).
- It does not make any noise. Listen to your computer right now: Do you hear the "brrrrrrrrr? Now go to Youtube and play a few videos ... Can you hear how the "brrrrrrrrr" sound increases its intensity? ... This thing is just silent ¡...
- It does not get really hot: put your computer a couple of hours on your lap and you may get a second degree burn ... "Here my friend," this thing is designed to dissipate heat into a much optimum wayand therefore the degree of warming is reduced (to give you an idea: the Mac has been turned on all night downloading stuff and now I am writing with him on my lap... With my brand-new netbook computer, in just one hour, the computer "burns" my hands).
- Virus? / Spyware? / Malware? - Apple's software is based on a type architecture called "UNIX" (strange word, I know, calm down) ... To give you an idea: all the software that controls the technology of NASA spacecraft, all the technology that controls the electronic transactions of all banks in the world, anything that requires there can not be a single failure, all of It, has something below, in some way or another, UNIX technology related stuff (Linux is a UNIX derivative) ...
- My parents understood it in 10 minutes: for me it shows that someone has thought about it, when both my parents we can use it intuitively (and my knowledge of technology is not the one of my parents, but my parents got it in minutes).

4. You can install Windows. I installed the other day to try and see what the experience was... Once again: is not the same a Mercedes and an Opel ...

Being away from the people who use computers that, in one form or another, are controlled at the end by me, I've been thinking very seriously about some things... I think that, for my parents, an iMac will be perfect: everything is connected with a cable, it is easy to handle and I know it will be impossible for him to install something odd ...

Because in the end, the most important thing is what you get out of the use of technology and experience in the process. It is not the same to make a cake in a very basic oven than in one which is the latest model, where you can choose the dish you are going to cook, so the oven will choose the time and temperature, making a self-cleaning process once you've finished cooking...

Once you finished cooking the cake in the basic oven (where you had to be watching the process all the time, having to clean it after you finish it and, yep, it's not funny and/or confortable at all to do so) then you think: "... What the hell! Maybe I would pay $ 500 more for a oven that...

So, finally, it may be true: "The Apple user pays $ 500 more than the PC user" ...

But of course it is not for the same thing...

A saying that I love: "Poor of the fool who confuses price and value" ...

But that's only my opinion and, as always, it is more than questionable :-))

That's it prevails Amsterdam :-))

  1. Hola Paquito,

    Paquito.
