Savoir Faire

Hola,

----------------- English Version ------------------

Hi,

Yes, You're right: I recently delayed my post publications... Mea culpa, no excuses ...

Today's post aims to highlight something that has happened to me recently: something that demonstrates some of the things I stand for, like the pursuit of excellence when doing things and giving "the extra mille" that distinguishes one good company from a great company...

As you know, in February, I decided to switch to Mac .. It's something I planned with way time ahead and, in principle, I wanted to do it so, at least once in my life, I would be able to say I had an Apple computer and I could give an assess opinion when establishing judgments about it technology.

Those who know me know what I think: the philosophy of the company in business terms is debatable (I do not like it: sometimes it's too restrictive and, in the case of the iPhone, things already border paranoia), but in terms of Software and Hardware Manufacturer, simply, they are light years ahead of its competitors (the iPhone, 45 million units sold later, it is the example).

Like Microsoft, which in October will release to market Windows 7, Apple last Friday released it new operating system, called "Mac OS X Snow Leopard" ... I guess in this new version (which basically changed everything that you do not see, behind the windows and fancy colors) they want to start building the foundation of its future operating systems (they do like that: one day they change the course of the ship and, if you like in, good and, if not, well, good-bye... That's Apple).

On Wednesday, while reading the news on my RSS, I see the launch is announced and it will happen on Friday 28th of August (launch expected in September) and also saw that you could already pre-order the CD in it online store. In addition, shipping costs were free, so, on impulse, I bought the CD, I gave my contact details and I just prepared myself to await the arrival...

On Friday, Snow Leopard was released around the world and, suddenly, perhaps by curiosity, I regretted having pre-ordered it, because, maybe, I could have come into a store and buy it right there...

Well, that's the theory: remember that shops in here close at 18:00, so I'm not sure how I would have done so... So in the end I did not care ...

On the Internet forums, people talked about the delivery dates Apple was giving: on my bill, they said "estimated delivery date is around 28 August" but I assumed that, above all, should be a simple "estimated date" (like when you buy something in here and they tell you that "your package will be delivered on a timeframe of 2 to 5 working days", for example) ...

On Friday evening, Apple sent me an e-mail: "Your CD has been put on the mail and it will take about 5 business days to reach your destination".

"Shit!" I thought: I should have waited and bought it directly from the store...

On Saturday morning, at noon, I suddenly hear the postman introducing something through the slot of the front door...

As I approached, I see a padded envelope and think "It can't be" ...

But it could: there he was, barely 24 hours after being launched worldwide, the CD that I had ordered was there, waiting to be installed ...

That made me think about its logistic systems: I pre-ordered my CD on Wednesday, which means that, as early, they put the CD on the outgoing mail on Thursday to, in two days, to have it delivered on my house...

Knowing that the product was released on Friday, I did it at the right time, since they could not deliver it earlier for obvious reasons :-))

These are the details that make the difference between good companies and great companies: Apple may be many things, and it's not up to me to discuss it (I am old, my beloved children) but they do their job fantastically well, taking care of their customers, taking care of the details that make you, like me, write about it today...

And by the way: the cost of the upgrade was 29 Euros ... Exceptionally cheap coming from Apple (which is why I believe they are preparing something that, of course, only they know about it :-)).

I always say the same: I just wanted to try it once in a lifetime but, after that, day after day, I'm more convinced that "switching" has been nothing but positive and that, now that I am convinced, I will migrate my family, because I'm tired of having to repair computers that start breaking or malfunctioning, just simply because they are used.

In Spain, unfortunately, Apple is still not as well implemented as in other countries (especially outside the big cities) but If you can go to an Apple or an Apple Center Shop (like those in El Corte Inglés or MediaMarkt Apple areas they have inside, for you an example) they will be able to explain to you for free how to solve your problems, or they give you in-store workshops and so on... Things that, again, is light years ahead of the rest (try if you have an Apple store in your city: these are the few things that are genuine Apple's free stuff :-)).

I wanted to say this: if in the next few months you have to or you want to buy a new computer, think about it a couple of times (It take more than a year, so do not hurry in making your decision :-)).

A hug: Amsterdam prevails :-))
